In the Beginning

There are four Gospels, and each was written from a different angle, a different perspective. Matthew emphasizes Jesus’ Kingship, Mark his servanthood, Luke his humanity. Those three are what are called the synoptic Gospels: that’s a Greek word that means “to see together.” They’re roughly the same with slightly different emphases.

Well, what about John’s Gospel? John’s purpose for writing this gospel is stated in John 20:30-31:

[30] Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; [31] but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

It was so that you may believe more and more that Jesus is the son of God, and that by knowing Him, you may then have life which is filled up with a joy that overflows from God into the depths of your soul and consumes your very existence.
