Overwhelming Grace

Oct 13, 2024    Alex Mark

I want to tell you from the outset that I have two goals this morning in preaching the Word. My first goal is to help you make sense of that little footnote in your Bible, which may say something like “The earliest manuscripts do not include 7:53-8:11.”  We need to deal with that, and it’s not a very easy task, and it’s even a little unnerving. Maybe you’ve read that before, here or in other places, and you’ve not really wanted to think about it because you don’t want anything to shake your confidence in the Word. But I think that rightly handled it will increase your confidence in God’s Word. So that’s the first goal.

And then the second goal is that we will, together, magnify the grace of Jesus Christ, not only in this story of this woman who was caught in the act of adultery, but more directly in our own lives. I hope that you will be amazed this morning at how well, how swiftly, how completely Jesus Christ forgives sin. And that as you see this extravagant grace He’s going to show, you’ll long to leave sin and cleave to the Savior.
